Happy End of 'NIE Week'

This was Newspapers in Education Week.

Really.

They actually still send newspapers, actual PAPER papers, to American classrooms every day.

Not that I don't appreciate the paper product, but, as I've said before here at Know Newspapers, this effort is not about the paper product.

This effort is about saving the news-gathering organizations we call "newspapers."

We'll be calling them "newspapers" long after the paper component is gone, same as you haven't "dialed" a telephone in decades, yet you still "dial" more than anyone ever did back in the day.

As for this NIE thing ... It's wonderful to see that American schoolchildren continue to learn about the importance of newspapers in our democracy. But, would it be too much to ask the little ones to take some of that knowledge home and educate their parents before this crisis claims another institution of journalism?

And, seriously ... could we get these kids a few computers so they can read the newspaper online like everyone else?
